Recruitment Notice: Postdoctoral 虎扑电竞er (Graduate School of Life Sciences)

The Graduate School of Life Sciences at Tohoku University is recruiting for the following position.

Position

Title: Postdoctoral 虎扑电竞er
Affiliation: Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University
Term of Employment: Non tenure-track faculty, three year contract (contract will be renewed on an annual basis)
Location: Watershed Ecology Lab, Graduate School of Life Sciences, Aobayama Campus, Aramaki Aza Aoba 6-3, Sendai Miyagi 980-8578
Start Date: April 1, 2026

Job Description

The Graduate School of Life Sciences invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to become part of an international research team studying ecohydraulic processes in a forested experimental watershed in Japan. The successful candidate will lead research that integrates high-resolution topographic river surveys, two-dimensional hydrodynamics, and aquatic habitat ecology, with the goal of improving scientific understanding of how flow patterns shape ecological function in stream riparian ecosystems.

The position centers on 2D hydraulic modelling as well as morphodynamic modelling with opportunities to work with tools such as HEC-RAS 2D, the iRIC suite, SRH-2D, BASEMENT, or comparable modelling programs. The selected researcher will work closely with Dr. Hiromi Uno (Tohoku University) and be co-advised by Dr. Danny White (Colorado State University), providing a unique interdisciplinary and international mentorship experience. The position is an excellent fit for candidates excited about ecohydraulics, fluvial geomorphology, habitat suitability modelling, and physically based approaches to river research.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and apply 2D hydrodynamic models as well as morphodynamic modling to quantify depth, velocity, and associated habitat conditions in an experimental forest catchment
  • Integrate hydraulic results with ecological observations to evaluate aquatic and riparian habitat suitability
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of hydraulic engineers, ecologists, and geomorphologists
  • Participate in field data collection
  • Present research through manuscripts, conferences, and collaborative scientific meetings

For further details, including how to apply, please see here.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in ecohydraulics, river engineering, hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, environmental science, or another relevant field
  • Experience in 2D hydraulic modelling, using tools such as HEC-RAS 2D, iRIC, SRH-2D, BASEMENT, or similar software
  • Experience or willingness to engage in research involving riparian or aquatic or aquatic organisms, habitat suitability, or ecohydraulic applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively with laboratory members and collaborators to accomplish tasks co-operatively in an international, bilingual lab where members communicate in English and Japanese

How to Apply

About the Graduate School

Life Science focuses on questions about living things all around us. How can we prevent the rapid loss of biodiversity? What can be done about our aging population? What must we do to understand the inner workings of our bodies and minds at a molecular level? The research and education efforts of the Graduate School of Life Sciences aims to answer questions like these that can deeply affect our everyday lives. The graduate school has three majors: Integrative Life Sciences, Ecological Adaptability Life Sciences, and Molecular and Chemical Life Science. Through cross-border and cross-discipline collaborations, researchers in each major will become global leaders with varied and rich research experience.
