Times Higher Education (THE), the company behind the World University Rankings, has released its annual list of top Japanese universities, with Tohoku University sitting pretty at number one.
THE, which compiles performance data on top universities, highlighted Tohoku University's emphasis on global education, and its growing number of international faculty, students and research collaborations, as factors in their decision.
The 16 metrics used to determine the rankings include teaching and learning environment, international outlook of staff and students, research citation and influence, and industry income.
THE also used what it describes as "engagement measures," such as student engagement, interaction between teachers and students, and how well employers view graduating students.
While Tohoku University has consistently placed in the top three of the Japan University Rankings, this is the first year that it has topped the list. Kyoto University is currently in second place, while the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology are tied at third.
