Tohoku University's International Support Centre (ISC) held an orientation session at Aobayama Campus on April 15, aimed at providing newly arrived international researchers with information about the university and its resources, as well as a practical guide to life in Sendai.

During the two-hour event, Sati Sekar from the ISC delivered an overview of Tohoku University, including instructions on accessing the campus Wi-Fi and Groupware system and using the inter-campus shuttle buses. She also highlighted the extensive support services available through the centre.

"We understand that moving to a new country can be overwhelming, especially with language barriers, and our goal is to alleviate some of the challenges associated with this transition," said Sekar. "We want the international community at the university to know that the ISC is here to assist them, to make the experience of living, learning and working in Sendai as smooth and enriching as possible."

Representatives from the Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association (SenTIA) were also on hand to talk about other means of support offered by the city, such as free translation and interpreter services.

Eli Unger and Tesia Law from SenTIA's Multicultural Centre then guided attendees through the practicalities of living in Japan, covering everything from garbage recycling and disposal, to housing matters, public transportation options and traffic regulations.
Other useful topics addressed at the session included Japanese language learning opportunities, an explanation of Japan's pension and insurance systems, tax obligations for foreign residents, guidance on visa and residence status matters and other government procedures.

With Japan prone to earthquakes and natural disasters, the session placed particular emphasis on safety, with detailed information about emergency services and disaster preparedness, earthquake response protocols, emergency kit preparation and identifying local evacuation centres.
Tohoku University also has regular safety drills on campus, where members can familiarise themselves with evacuation routes, and the use of fire extinguishers and other first aid equipment.

"We hope that the participants came away from this session with a clearer understanding of the various support services available to them during their stay in Sendai, both within the university and externally, as well as how to access this assistance," said ISC Director Hirotaka Hirayama. "And we also hope that the event provided an opportunity for participants to connect with each other and begin forming a sense of community."

International researchers and students who missed this session and would like to attend the next one on April 24 at Katahira Campus, can register online at: https://forms.gle/cycQMw9KZ4Wtx44j8.
