On June 4, Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Pr?mel, President of Technische Universit?t Darmstadt, visited Tohoku University and met with President Hideo Ohno. Darmstadt, officially known as the 'City of Science', is an academic city in Germany with around 30,000 students amongst a population of around 160,000 citizens. Technische Universit?t Darmstadt and Tohoku University began exchanging researchers in the 1990s. In 2003, the two universities concluded an academic exchange agreement. Since then, there have been a number of exchanges, most notably in the fields of mathematics and mechanical engineering.
In the discussion between President Ohno and President Pr?mel, a wide range of topics were raised such as the management of universities and the history of Tohoku University's interactions with Germany. They specifically referenced Albert Einstein's visit to Tohoku University immediately after receiving the Nobel Prize in 1922. In their talks, President Ohno stated that the Graduate School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Science are planning to conclude an MoU with Technische Universit?t Darmstadt in the near future as part of Tohoku University's International Joint Graduate Program in Materials Science. President Ohno expressed his appreciation for support in future collaborative activities.
Prior to the meeting, the delegation visited the 虎扑电竞 Center for Rare Metal and Green Innovation on the Aobayama Campus and were introduced to the most advanced research being carried out at Tohoku University.
