On November 23, 2017, Tohoku University Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki and Professor Toshiyuki Takagi of the Institute of Fluid Science attended JANET FORUM 2017, which was held at the University of Freiburg, Germany.
JANET is a network of Japanese academic institutions that have liaison offices or research bases in Europe. This year's forum, organized by Nagoya University at their European Center located in the University of Freiburg, attracted some 80 participants from Japan and Germany.
The forum program consisted of five sessions per theme: enhancement of student mobility, collaborative education with Europe, support for promoting collaborative research by universities, cooperation in research and training in the Upper Rhine Region, and research funding and political implementation for research.
In Tohoku University's session on collaborative education with Europe, EVP Ueki gave a presentation explaining the Double Degree Programs and the International Joint Graduate Programs.
At the JANET General Meeting held after the forum, Tohoku University was officially accepted as a steering committee member, joining Hokkaido University, the University of Tsukuba, Chiba University, Nagoya University, Osaka University and Nara Institute of Science and Technology.
It was also decided that Tohoku University will be the organizer of FORUM 2018, to be held at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA - Lyon). Tohoku University's Institute of Fluid Science has a liaison office there, which was introduced to members at the meeting by INSA-Lyon's vice-president Dr. Marie-Pierre Favre.
The next day, the forum moved to the Centre Européen d'Etudes Japonaises d'Alsace in France. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) organized a number of workshops, one of which saw Professor Toshiyuki Takagi introducing the activities of Tohoku University's liaison office at INSA-Lyon.
- JANET (Japan Academic Network in Europe):
- JANET stands for the Japanese Academic Network in Europe, a loose network of universities and academic institutions in Japan that have liaison offices or education/research bases in Europe. Members seek to share information on their academic efforts in Europe, in order to jointly cooperate in their European endeavors, and to enhance the overall presence of Japanese academia in Europe. The group's inaugural meeting was held in November 2015, and the first forum (JANET FORUM 2016) was held in July 2016 at the Free University of Berlin (organized by the University of Tsukuba).
