On September 8, Professor Yasuhisa Hirata from the Graduate School of Engineering, in collaboration with Professor Eric Monacelli from the University of Paris-Saclay in France, will present "Yes We Dance!" a performance of "Smarter Inclusive Dance" at Le Club 2024 de Versailles, an official fan zone of the Paris Paralympics.

"Smarter Inclusive Dance" leverages AI robot technology to create a dance experience that transcends physical barriers, allowing people to enjoy dancing together regardless of age or disability. Mobility support robots, for example, can be used not just for transportation but as a means of emotional expression.

This project is part of the Japanese government's Moonshot 虎扑电竞 and Development Programme, which aims to create a vibrant society where AI robots are seamlessly integrated into daily life by 2050. "We aim to enable everyone to actively participate in life through the use of AI robots anytime, anywhere and without anxiety," said Hirata, who is the national manager for the project. "We want to share this vision with people around the world, and our first step is to create an inclusive world through dance."

Since its inception in 2023, the "Smarter Inclusive Dance" initiative has brought together a diverse team of researchers, dance experts, physical and occupational therapists and engineers. Its "Yes We Dance!" performance has already showcased in France, Japan, Canada and South Africa, demonstrating the potential of AI robots in inclusive dance.

The event at Le Club 2024 de Versailles will feature members of the NPO "Minna no Dance Field," dancers with disabilities, and researchers performing alongside AI robots.

And there will also be an extra interactive demonstration the day before. Anyone interested in learning more about "Smarter Inclusive Dance" can have the opportunity to experience operating the robots used in the performance.
