The cherry blossoms on campus mark the start of a new academic year and Tohoku University says welcome to 2,469 new undergraduates and 2,470 graduate students. To prevent the spread of the coronavirus on campus, the university cancelled all large events, including the official entrance ceremony. Instead, speeches and orientation materials are being shared online.
In his welcome message (PDF), University President Hideo Ohno spoke of the university's strength in innovative research, as well as its global focus.
"Our strong academic and industry network will give you a chance to not only gain advanced knowledge of the subjects you choose, but also to interact with and learn from students around the world," he said. "I'm confident that your time with us will be intellectually stimulating and emotionally fulfilling."
President Ohno also referred to the impact of the coronavirus on the community and urged everyone to be socially responsible because "as a family we care about each other's health and well-being."
Medical student Kanai Saki gave a message (PDF) on behalf of the incoming class. She outlined three goals - to explore other fields while excelling in her major subject; to engage with people of diverse backgrounds; and to take on challenges (and not fear failure) in order to gain new experiences and practical skills.
Most classes will officially begin on April 20, but before that, students should make sure that they receive their Tohoku University ID and are able to get connected.
