Applications for spring admissions onto the 2015 Interdepartmental Doctoral Degree Program for Multi-dimensional Materials Science Leaders are now open.

The Program for Leading Graduate Schools is a five year integrated Master's and Doctor's degree program initiated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in 2012. Since its establishment, a total of 62 Leading Graduate School programs have been created in 30 universities throughout country.
At Tohoku University, the Multi-dimensional Materials Science Leaders (MD) program was set up in 2013 with the first students enrolling in April 2014. The purpose of the program is to cultivate creative students to become leaders in the field of materials science.
Under the MD Program, Tohoku University has brought together the very best of its Materials Science expertise to train students to have a comprehensive understanding of materials from a from a multidisciplinary perspective.
- Grants
To help secure the brightest students from both inside and outside Japan, the MD program provides financial support to selected graduate students. Support is provided in the form of monthly grants, between 150,000 JPY - 200,000.
* Recipients of the grant are not allowed to receive other financial aid, such as a JASSO scholarship, or earn money through part-time jobs.
- Eligibility to apply
Students who have been accepted into a 2015 Master's program in one of the fifteen MD program affiliated departments (listed below). Transfer students, who enrolled in a master's course in 2014, can also apply.
* The MD program is open for students only who intend to complete Doctoral program since the program is a 5 year integrated Master's and Doctoral degree program.
