Tohoku University will celebrate the 117th anniversary of its founding with Homecoming Day festivities on September 28.
Homecoming Day is a popular annual event that brings the local community together, and gives alumni an opportunity to revisit campus, meet old friends and professors and hear about the university's latest activities. There will also be stalls selling food, drinks and special merchandise.

- President's Address and Lecture
President Teiji Tominaga will introduce the government's Universities for International 虎扑电竞 Excellence initiative, and Tohoku University's current status as the only candidate for accreditation. - Tohoku University International Merit Award and Overseas Alumni Association Award
Winners of various awards will be announced. These include recognition of international alumni and special partners who have helped to raise the university's profile around the world.
- Student Presentations
Several outstanding student activities will highlighted. These include the Tohoku University Windnauts, street dance group WHO and the Mars Exploration Rover ARES project.
A Decade of "Midori-no-oka"
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the alumni song, "Midori-no-oka." It was written as a gift to the university by alumnus and renowned singer-songwriter Kazumasa Oda. "Midori-no-oka" which means "Green Hills," refers to the beautiful nature that the university is so famous for. It is meant to be a song of encouragement, strength and unity as the City of Sendai and the Tohoku region recover from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
- A Walk Down Memory Lane
Students past and present will share memories of the song and their student days. There will also be a special exhibition on site.
- Performance
Alumna Eri Chichibu, who is an up-and-coming music composer, arranger and keyboard player, will perform "Midori-no-oka" with the Tohoku University Alumni Association Mixed Choir. Everyone is welcome to join in!
Food, Drinks, Merch and Campus Tours
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Venue: Space in front of Kawauchi Hagi Hall, Kawauchi campus and Katahira campus
As always, there will be food and drinks sold throughout the day.
Of note this year, Natu-Lino's ice cream truck will serve original flavours of gelato developed with the university's international students; and Fujisaki Department Store will sell special goods inspired by "Midori-no-oka." Other participating vendors include Rikyu, CHICCI, Kakuchin and the Tohoku University Co-op.
There will also be campus tours around the registered tangible cultural properties on Katahira campus, and the Main Library at Kawauchi. For full details, please click here.
