The Ambassador of Romania to Japan visits Tohoku University

On October 4, the Ambassador of Romania to Japan, H.E. Ovidiu Dranga, visited Tohoku University and met with Executive Vice President (EVP) Toshiya Ueki.

EVP Ueki began by welcoming the ambassador and mentioning that this year marks the 110th anniversary of Tohoku University becoming the first university in Japan to admit female students. He went on to speak about how the university has contributed to society through its research and educational activities. He also noted that, as a university located at the heart of the region affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the university has become a leader in disaster science, conducting interdisciplinary research and contributing to the formulation of global agendas.

Mr. Dranga mentioned the 'Joint Statement on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between Japan and Romania' issued at the Japan-Romania Summit Meeting held in March this year. The joint statement outlines the countries' desire to further strengthen their relationship in fields such as biomedicine, artificial intelligence, robotics, and electric vehicles, as well as startup initiatives, which are some of Romania's strengths.

An exchange student from Romania was also in attendance and contributed to a lively discussion regarding the promotion of further student exchanges.

It is expected that this visit will contribute to the further development of educational and research exchanges between Tohoku University and Romania.
