To commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Indonesia, Tohoku University and the University of Indonesia held a workshop on Public Outreach and Contribution to Society for Humanities and Social Sciences on October 25.
The 10-member delegation from the University of Indonesia, led by its Vice Rector Bambang Wibawarta, was joined by 17 representatives of Tohoku University, including Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki.
The workshop began with a morning session on law and political science, and faculty members from both universities introduced ongoing international education programs and discussed ways to proceed with regard to future collaboration.
In the afternoon, researchers in the field of disaster science at Tohoku University, along with their counterparts in psychology at the University of Indonesia, presented case examples of activities involving the wider public. This was followed by a discussion on how research in the humanities and social sciences can make an impact on society.
"The disseminating of research results in humanities and the social sciences is an important way for universities to contribute to improving our communities," said Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi. "I think the holding of such a workshop is useful and of great significance."
