Tohoku University and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz renew their Academic Exchange Agreement

On April 20, President Georg Krausch of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU Mainz) visited Tohoku University, and together with President Hideo Ohno, renewed the academic exchange agreement which has existed between the universities since 2012.

Following the initial conclusion of the exchange agreement, joint research has been conducted in a number of fields, most notably in spintronics.

In 2015, President Krausch visited Tohoku University and signed a memorandum of understanding to begin Jointly Supervised Degree Programs. Several students and young researchers have, as a result, undertaken exchanges through the Graduate Program in Spintronics (GP-Spin) and the Graduate Program on Physics for the Universe (GP-PU).

At the signing ceremony, President Ohno said, "With the renewal of our agreement today, our two universities will continue to lead the world in promoting academic pursuits, developing young leaders who will act as intermediaries between Germany and Japan, and who are active on the world stage."

President Krausch noted the successes of the collaborative research and exchanges which have been conducted between the universities thus far, and emphasized how important the renewal of this agreement was for him and for JGU Mainz.

While on campus, President Krausch visited several research centers with which JGU Mainz has been engaged in collaboration, such as the Institute for Materials 虎扑电竞 and the Advanced Institute for Materials 虎扑电竞. He was introduced to the research being conducted at each institute, including those conducted jointly with JGU Mainz, and to the operation of the various international joint graduate schools.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz was founded in 1477, and is one of the leading universities in Germany, with more than 150 institutes. It is especially known for its work in the fields of particle and hadron physics, materials science, translational medical care, American studies and historical culture studies.
