The Ambassador of India to Japan pays a visit to Tohoku University

On July 10, the Ambassador of India to Japan, H.E. Sibi George, visited Tohoku University and met with President Hideo Ohno.

President Ohno welcomed the visit of Ambassador George, who took office in January this year, and said that the university has accepted many outstanding students from India. He introduced areas of common interest between Japan and India, in which the university has strengths, such as ammonia combustion, semiconductors, and quantum science, and he expressed the university's desire to further promote education and research exchanges with India.

Ambassador George also expressed his hopes for the expansion of exchanges in the future, noting that while the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada were hitherto the main destinations for Indian students, Japan is now becoming more attractive, and that Tohoku University in particular is becoming more interesting to those who wish to study abroad. In addition, President Ohno noted that the next-generation synchrotron radiation facility NanoTerasu, which was visited by Ambassador George and his party, is being constructed through a public-private regional partnership. He also introduced the development of a nearby science park at which Japanese and overseas research institutes and companies will work together.

In addition to meeting with the president, the visiting delegation also spoke with Indian students. The Ambassador told them that he expects the younger generation will play a leading role in future relations between Japan and India, and he enthusiastically responded to questions posed by the students.
