The first General Assembly Meeting of the Association of Institutions of Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Japan was held in Sapporo over the weekend of May 19-20.
The event, which was also the seventh installment of the Japan-Russia Forum of Rectors, was hosted by Hokkaido University, and attended by representatives from various Japanese and Russian institutions and government agencies. The theme of the meeting was "Promotion of Human Resource Development for Japan-Russia Economic Cooperation and Personnel Exchange."
A number of subcommittee meetings were held on the second day. Participants presented reports on how they used the characteristics of their university, and of the region in which they are based, to improve in one of three areas: personnel exchange, health and medicine, and regional development.
Tohoku University participated in the session on personnel exchange, at which Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi gave a presentation entitled "Russo-Japanese Exchange Activities at Tohoku University."
Later, the outcomes from the discussions were summarized and shared at the General Assembly. The ideas presented gave the attendees an opportunity to consider ways of fostering future generations of talented individuals who can help develop mutually beneficial relations between Japan and Russia.
At the closing ceremony, a joint communique on the establishment of a Committee for Personnel Exchange between Japan and Russia, a Steering Committee for Specialized Sections, and a Student Association was adopted. It was also agreed that both countries will continue to promote interdisciplinary collaborative research and youth exchanges.
