A broadcast of Japan's Birdman Rally was screened on national TV last night, showing Tohoku University's win in the propeller-driven long distance class. The contest was held on July 25 - 26 in Shiga Prefecture.
Tohoku University's Aviation Club, whose members are known as the "Windnauts," hold the record for the longest flight, made in 2008 when they flew 36000.00m across Lake Biwa in their human-powered aircraft.
The Windnauts' win this year, with a distance of 35367.02m, is the second longest flight recorded in the history of competition. It also takes Tohoku University's total number of wins in the event to five.
