Hosted by Tohoku University and Sapienza University of Rome, this year's Hasekura International Japanese Studies Symposium will be held online over two weekends and will feature the theme "Yonaoshi (世直し): Envisioning a Better World."
In the first weekend, participants from 21 universities around the world will present their research and thoughts on how to make the world better, including the quest to cure disease and prevent disasters; and looking at justice, equality and freedom as works of art as well as movements for real-world change.
The third day will feature a special panel discussion on the political systems, student movements, social movements and cultural change during "The Long 1960s" in Japan and Italy.
And graduate students from Tohoku University and Sapienza University of Rome will showcase their research on the final day.
