Reconsidering the Japanese Peace Preservation Law嵶芦S隔隈?壅深6/13_岸
In this lecture, Marx Ward (Associate Professor of History, Middlebury College) will provide an overview of his recently published Thought Crime: Ideology and State Power in Interwar Japan (Duke University Press, 2019), where he explores the Japanese state's efforts to suppress political radicalism in the 1920s and 1930s.
In this work, Ward traces the evolution of the antiradical Peace Preservation Law from its initial application to suppress communism and anticolonial nationalism to its expansion into an elaborate system to reform and ideologically convert thousands of thought criminals throughout the Japanese Empire.
The lecture will be in English, and all area welcome to attend.
