Dear students, faculty and staff,
Encouraged by the efforts of everyone in our community in taking COVID-19 preventive measures seriously, the university has decided to move its BCP level down to 2 from June 1.
Although we are trending in the right direction, the danger has not passed. On the contrary, the easing of restrictions around the country, and in our community, means that there is even greater responsibility on us as individuals, to continue doing the right things to keep those around us safe. That means maintaining strict hygiene standards, avoiding crowded places and above all, practicing social distancing.
At Tohoku University, classes will still be conducted online, but BCP level 2 will see a few more instances where students might be granted special permission to use facilities on campus such as laboratories, and study rooms for wifi access.
The cross-prefectural travel ban that has prevented some students from returning to Sendai before the start of term, will also be gradually lifted in June. So affected students should begin preparing for travel, and we look forward to having you back.
On the administrative front, we are announcing a new online system which will give us greater flexibility and efficiency.
Under the new system, administrative and consultative services for students, faculty and staff will be expanded online, with broader focus and stronger interpersonal communication. We will also replace the use of "hanko" seals with an electronic approval system.
At BCP Level 2, more staff will be able to work from their office on campus, but many will still be telecommuting or keeping flexible hours. Our new, upgraded online environment gives staff remote access to resources and meetings, so there will be little to no disruption to the workflow. This flexible working style is a major feature of our new system going forward.
As always in times of adversity, there is strength in unity. Let's continue to work together and look out for each other, as we embrace this new normal and take cautious steps towards re-opening our campus.
